The Empire State Building lights up purple tonight in honor of NYU’s graduating class. A stroll through dark but vibrant streets brings back the wonder from freshman orientation. This four-year investment into academics, friendships and new experiences is all paying off now.
As department parties and school-wide events pass by, I realize that every student I’ve seen on this campus is the product of parents, families and communities throughout the world. The personality of every individual I see on the street is somewhat explained by the parents and siblings now walking beside them. Those influences will never leave entirely, but the wealth of new knowledge and experiences has shaped students into individual adults. Once the parents leave, the streets revert to their carefree selves, always remembering and appreciating in some deep depths the values instilled in them.
