From newspapers to self-help books, society speaks constantly of achieving a “work-life balance.” Nearly everyone complains of stress and overwork, with no time to rest themselves. But I’ve found that when we attain some semblance of a work-life balance, we are still unsatisfied. Hearing stories of how others labor late into the night, often with little sleep, we feel that we are not living up to our potential. We who have healthy amounts of sleep and food somehow feel left out and fear that we are losing the race in the game of life.
But then what did we desire in a balanced life? Perhaps that life is too calm for us. We live on the pressure and enjoy the pity garnered by being workaholics.
Hard work is a necessity, but so is sticking to priorities. We should choose carefully what we spend our time on, and put living a healthy life at the top of the list.
You only live once.
