We wish we didn’t have them, but we are grateful that they make us get things done. Deadlines push us to finish tasks that we might otherwise leave undone. Deadlines force our brains to think faster and harder, which strengthens our mental capabilities.
And when we meet all our deadlines we feel accomplished — only to realize that there are many more to come.
To the college student, whose mind revolves constantly around deadlines, the school year is a continual struggle to keep ahead of due dates. Only then do we realize, to our regret, that life will be an endless competition with deadlines.
But then, life has a deadline of its own. We may never finish everything, but we can at least complete what’s important.
