The Little Prince always seems more popular in Taiwan than in America. While browsing through 成品 (eslite bookstore) in Hsinchu I found a book entitled “小王子給媽媽的信” (The Little Prince’s Letters to his Mother). Initially the book seemed to be a spinoff of the original little prince story, but the author was listed as Antonie Saint-Exupery.
I read the first letter. It was a short, endearing note by a ten-year-old boy who longs to see his mother. He is at boarding school and can only see her on weekends. Then I realized that the letters were Exupery’s own letters, translated from the original French into Chinese.
The letters continue into Exupery’s adulthood. They document his little delights, his struggles at school, and his love for his mother. It is a very sweet read, especially when you’re missing someone.
