Have you been influenced by others? Do you want to influence others? More importantly, do you want to know God more?
I’ve been reading Oswald Chamber’s devotional My Utmost for His Highest and have discovered another level of the Christian faith that I’ve never experienced before. In his entry for May 18, Chambers goes beyond the traditional meaning of the lilies of the field. Instead of reminding us not to worry, Chambers focuses on how God uses the flowers’ mere existence to teach us how to live for Him. We often attempt to influence others by our actions, but a far more effective way is for us to concentrate on God, for then the Holy Spirit will naturally flow out of us to touch others.
Think about how you have been most influenced. Often it is not what people say but how they live out God’s Word that inspires us to change. Chambers writes:
“The people who influence us the most are not those who detain us with their continual talk,
but those who live their lives like the stars in the sky and ‘the lilies of the field’ –
– simply and unaffectedly.
Those are the lives that mold and shape us.”
All we need to do is trust completely in God; He will graciously let us experience the blessings of serving Him.
